Open Day 2025 – Illuminating the Legacy: A Journey Through IIA’s Library and Archives
On March 2, 2025, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) welcomed over 5,300 visitors to its much-anticipated Open Day, offering an immersive experience into the rich scientific legacy and ongoing contributions of the institute. The day unfolded through four major themes, each weaving a story of exploration, innovation, and dedication to the skies.
The life and legacy of M.K. Vainu Bappu, one of India’s most revered astronomers and the founding force behind modern Indian astrophysics, was brought to life through a captivating photographic journey. Visitors were able to trace his extraordinary path-from his pioneering work to the foundational role he played in shaping the IIA. Equally engaging was the visual narrative of the historical Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, a site that has stood the test of time since the 19th century, continuing to serve as a beacon for solar studies in India.

A highlight for many was the detailed exhibit on the groundbreaking discoveries of John Evershed, including the famed Evershed Effect. Visitors had the rare opportunity to view original discovery plates from 1909 featuring the analysis of sunspot spectra offering a tangible connection to the moment of discovery that still resonates in solar physics.

The Instruments of IIA exhibit, enriched with historic photographs, provided visitors with a close look at the tools that shaped decades of research. Instruments that once revolutionized observational astronomy were also on display—original pieces like the drum chronograph, transit circle, and theodolite stood as elegant reminders of the meticulous craftsmanship and scientific precision of their time. Another gem in the exhibit was the rare collection of books dating as far back as 1786, showcasing the depth of scholarly heritage preserved within IIA’s archives.
Engagement soared as more than 4,000 visitors actively participated in interactive sessions with the IIA Library team, sparking vibrant discussions around astronomical research, archival practices, and library resources. To honor the leadership that has steered the institute through generations, a specially designed banner traced the journey of IIA director’s from 1786 to the present, highlighting their achievements and contributions to the institution.

Complementing the main themes were a series of well-curated posters that broadened the scope of the event: the fascinating history of the Madras Observatory, and informative visuals on IIA’s library & Archive’s collection and their locations and a separate banner highlighting the IIA library and archives services. Adding a nostalgic touch, a photographic montage chronicled visits from distinguished delegates over the years, capturing the enduring connections between IIA and the global scientific community. From history to discovery, from instruments to archives, the Open Day became a space where the past and future of Indian astronomy converged—fostering curiosity, inspiring dialogue, and celebrating a legacy that continues to look skyward.
