DOOT
A student-led magazine from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics
The IIA e-magazine ‘DOOT’ is aimed at sharing primarily research articles across IIA and popularizing astronomy & astrophysics among the public. The idea of DOOT came about as a way to communicate and promote the work done by IIA researchers among themselves and to the general community in different fields and, in this way, to bring the IIA family closer. The first magazine of DOOT was released in August 2020. Since then, we have successfully released eight issues, encompassing over 125 articles. The articles in DOOT take you into the incredible world of astronomy and how astronomers explore the universe and understand the science hidden in the depths of the beautiful ‘starry night.’ It brings forth contributions in the form of research-based review articles, creativity that includes art, poetry, and satire, interviews with renowned scientists, simplified explanations of scientific principles, experiences shared by the IIA fraternity, memories of IIA, and career guidance from our illustrious alumni, stories from our field stations, and an amazing set of astrophotography. Although “Doot” (Sanskrit: दूत [dūta] ) in a literal sense means “a messenger” in various Indic languages. The magazine does not act as a mere messenger but caters to multiple things with an inclusive vision of bringing together different factions under one umbrella.
Significance of the logo
‘D’ signifies the diverse nature of the content presented in the magazine, from simple art to technical articles, including interviews, research reviews, personal experiences, and a whole lot more.
The first ‘O’ is an ode to the Milky Way, our home, a spiral galaxy, but is generalized for galaxies as a whole, representing many disciplines of astrophysical research included in it.
The second ‘O’ symbolizes a black hole, one of the many intriguing mysteries yet at the heart of almost all the large galaxies.
Finally, the ‘T’ represents various Telescopes, which have given birth to many curiosities and are further used to probe these by collecting the astrophysical messengers (the photons from various sources). Eventually, ‘T’ brings all these things ‘Together’ under one umbrella
