Article Processing Charges
Article Processing Charges (APCs), also known as Author Processing Charges or Article Publication Fees, are fees charged by publishers to make research articles openly accessible immediately upon publication. Commonly associated with Gold Open Access and hybrid journals, APCs help cover the costs of manuscript review, editorial processing, publication, hosting, and long-term dissemination. In some cases, additional charges may apply for services such as colour figures or supplementary publication requirements. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Library supports researchers by providing guidance on APCs, publisher policies, open-access publishing options, journal selection, and available funding opportunities.
The APC can be supported through the following two methods:
1. ONOS-Supported Journals: APCs for eligible authors and journals may be covered under the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) agreements.
2. IIA APC Funding: For journals not covered under ONOS, APC support may be available through IIA, subject to institutional guidelines, funding availability, and the approval process.
1. ONOS-Supported Journals
1.1 Eligibility for APC Support: Faculty members, research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, students, and staff affiliated with IIA are eligible to receive APC support for publishing their research in journals covered under ONOS, subject to the publisher's eligibility requirements and ONOS guidelines.

1.2 Eligibility Criteria: Authors seeking APC support must
satisfy all of the following conditions:
- IIA-affiliated author must be the First Author or Corresponding Author of the article. The applicant, along with all co-authors, must submit a joint declaration confirming that no claim for APC funding has been made or will be made from any other source (government or private, within India or abroad) for the same article. Authors can directly visit ONOS APC → Apply APC, register, and apply for APC support.
- The manuscript must have been formally accepted for publication by the journal.
- The journal must be included in the approved ONOS APC-supported journal list.
- The APC must not be funded or reimbursed through any other source, including research grants, sponsored projects, funding agencies, institutional support, or any other financial assistance. If APC support is subsequently received from another source, the APC amount provided under the ONOS scheme must be refunded, and the author(s) may be subject to appropriate administrative and/or legal action.
1.3 Journal Eligibility: APC support is available only for eligible fully Open Access journals listed by INFLIBNET under ONOS. Researchers should refer to the ONOS website for the latest journal list, eligibility criteria, and application procedures.

Publisher Invoice Details: After the article is accepted for publication, inform the publisher that the APC will be paid directly by the INFLIBNET Centre. Request that the APC Invoice/Proforma Invoice be issued in the name and address specified by INFLIBNET below:

2. APC Support Through IIA
For journals not covered under the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) APC programme, IIA faculty members, research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, students, and staff may apply for Article Processing Charge (APC) support through the Institute. The IIA Library processes APC requests and, upon approval and verification of the required documents, arranges direct payment to the publisher.
2.1 Journal Eligibility: Currently, APC support through the
Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is available only for publications in
journals that are not covered under the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS)
initiative, in accordance with the Institute's existing APC support policy. For
publications in other eligible journals, authors requiring APC support may
discuss their funding requirements with the Dean on a case-by-case basis.
Further, if IIA researchers are co-authors in a publication covered under ONOS
APC supported journals and none of the other co-authors are eligible to request
support under ONOS APC programme, such IIA researchers also may seek APC support
through IIA for their share of APC. Approval will be subject to the availability
of funds and the Institute's APC policy. The Institute does not provide
financial support for Open Access publication charges.
Note:
- If a publication includes co-author(s) from other institutions, the total Article Processing Charge (APC) shall be apportioned among the participating institutions based on the number of affiliated authors. IIA will consider supporting only the share attributable to author(s) affiliated with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), subject to the Institute's APC policy.
- Authors affiliated with IIA are eligible for an APC discount under the Institute’s subscription to Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A). To avail of this benefit, authors must inform the publisher of their IIA affiliation before the invoice is generated. Once an invoice has been issued, the publisher does not revise or amend it to apply the discount.
